
Dr. Douglas Wheeler, Department Head

Dr. Wheeler teaches
courses in music history and studio percussion.
He holds two degrees from West Chester State University in
Pennsylvania. He was the
first person to receive a Doctor of Arts degree in percussion
performance from the University of Northern Colorado.
He has done research
into the acoustic properties of percussion instruments and has had
numerous articles on acoustics and percussion performance published in
Woodwind World, Brass and Percussion; the NACWPI Journal, and Percussive
Notes magazines.
Dr. Wheeler has
performed as section leader of the United States Air Force Academy Band,
and principal percussionist and timpanist of the Colorado Springs
Symphony. In addition, he
has performed as percussionist and/or timpanist with the Greeley
Philharmonic, the University of Northern Colorado Wind Ensemble under
Eugene Corporon, the Tupelo Symphony, the Mississippi Symphony, the
Tupelo Symphonic Winds, and the Delta Symphony.
He previously taught at
Delta State University in Mississippi where he also served as chair of
the Department of Music for fourteen years.
He remains an active percussionist teacher and performer while
also serving as Head of the Department of Music at Clayton State University.
