Directions for the Research-Based Argument

Due date: The final version of your paper is due Tuesday, April 14.   PAPERS ARE DUE IN CLASS, ON PAPER.

Topic and text: Write a paper 4 -6 pages in length in which you persuasively express a point of view toward an approved topic, substantiating your argument with research. The minimum for the paper is 4 complete pages of text, and the maximum is 6 complete pages--excluding Works Cited and Works Consulted pages.  A cover page is NOT used for MLA undergraduate papers, except at the request of a specific instructor.  Do not write more than six pages of text.

A Works Cited page is required.  Here you will list MLA style references, in hanging indents, double-spaced, that are cited in the text of your paper.
A Works Consulted page is optional. Here you will list MLA style references, hanging indents, double-spaced, that are NOT cited in the text of your paper.  These are articles that you read and would like to get credit for in the content portion of your grade but that you had no reason to directly quote or to reference in your paper.

Topic Approval  Your topic must be approved before you pursue it. Topics "forbidden" for this semester include abortion and on-line dating.

The purpose of your paper will be to persuade the reasonable reader to see an arguable topic from your point of view.

Audience:  Your argument will be directed toward an audience of your academic peers who may hold opposing viewpoints or agree in whole or in part with your point of view.

Reading requirement:  You need to read 6-12  articles on your topic, including at least one that presents an opposing view.  These will be acknowledged on Works Cited or Works Consulted pages.

Format:  You will follow the format prescribed by the Modern Language Association (MLA) for particulars of presentation, quotation, reference, and citation.
