VPA:: Degrees: Communication and Media Studies
Admission to CMS
Students who plan to major in CMS will be admitted to Clayton
State University as pre-CMS majors. Upon meeting the requirements
detailed below, pre-CMS students should apply for admission into the
upper-division program.
Admission Requirements
Students seeking the B.A. in Communication and Media Studies
(CMS) must meet all University admission, academic progression,
and graduation requirements. In addition, applicants must
satisfy the following additional requirements in order to be
admitted to the CMS program:
- Have completed 45 semester credit hours;
- Have completed ENGL 1102, COMM 1110, CMS 2010, and
CMS 2100 with grades of A, B, C, or K;
- Have achieved a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at
least 2.5 in ENGL 1102, COMM 1110, CMS 2010, and CMS
2100;
- Have completed (or be exempt from) both parts of the
Regents' Test (Essay and Reading);
- Have successfully completed the CMS program-entry
writing assessment.
A student not admitted into the CMS program may elect to
repeat courses that were not satisfactorily completed and that
disqualified him or her from admission. If a student elects to
repeat such courses and receives grades that meet the above
criteria, the student may reapply for admission to the CMS
program.
Transfer students will be required to meet the same criteria
as Clayton State University students. For transfer students who
meet the admissions requirements, the application deadline will
be the same as the application deadline for the University.
Changing from pre-CMS to CMS
Once they have completed all requirements, students submit submit change-of-major requests via the SWAN. (This is the same process used
to declare any new major.) The steps are as follows:
- Log into the
SWAN to change your major.
- Go to Academic and Financial Information
- Select "Communication and Media Studies" from
the appropriate drop-down menu and submit your
request.
- You will receive an email response from the CMS
coordinator informing you whether your request was
approved and when it will take effect. Please allow
5-7 days for a response.
