Textual Analysis Paper Workshops
Note that this is not a group assignment; you must work ALONE while
studying and writing your thesis, outline, and paper. No collaboration outside
of the writing workshops is permitted; if you do collaborate (outside of the
assigned workshops and perhaps just watching the film together), you risk
plagiarism, possible failure on the assignment, and/or failure of the course.
(So don’t do that.)
All paper workshops are mandatory; absences will count double and you will
receive a 0 for that workshop participation grade.
Paper Workshop I
1) Submit via email your summary sentence and
thesis sentence (one sentence
each and they must be different) to the TA(s) and to your workshop
partner (listed on the class roll) by the date on the
schedule before the workshop. Copy this
email to Dr. Bonner by this deadline too.
2) Print out, read, annotate,
& edit your workshop partner's thesis. Refer
to our Comments Guide for guidance. Your job is
to offer suggestions for how to make the thesis clearer, how to make the writing
& grammar
clearer, how to make sure it's a thesis and not a summary, and how to best support that thesis with examples from the film's
formal techniques.
3)
Bring your written comments on your partner's thesis on hard copy to the
workshop. Exchange and discuss your written feedback on your partner's paper outline
with your partner during Workshop I in class. Save all of your TA and
partner's written comments; you will turn them in to Dr. Bonner with the
final version of your paper.
Your comments and your thesis will be graded for their effort and
thoroughness.
Paper Workshop II
1) Submit your summary sentence, revised thesis sentence, and detailed outline to your workshop
partner (listed on the class roll) by the date on the
schedule via email. Send an email copy of this
document to Dr. Bonner and our TA(s) as a Word attachment by this deadline too.
2) Print out, read, annotate,
& edit your workshop partner's thesis & outline. Refer
to our Comments Guide for guidance. Your job is
to offer suggestions for how to make the thesis clearer, how to improve the writing
& grammar, and how to best support that thesis with examples from the film.
3)
Bring your written comments on your partner's outline on hard copy to the
workshop. Exchange and discuss with your partner your written feedback on your partner's paper outline during Workshop II in class.
Save all of your TA and partner's written comments; you will turn them in to
Dr. Bonner with the final version of your paper.
Your comments and your outline will be graded for their effort and
thoroughness.
Paper Workshop III
1) Submit your Textual Analysis Paper to your
workshop partner (listed on the class roll) by the date
on the
schedule via email AND bring a hard
copy to class/Music 105 box for the TAs. Copy this
emailed document to Dr. Bonner and our TAs as a Word attachment by this deadline too.
2) Print out, read, annotate,
& edit your workshop partner's paper. Refer
to our Comments Guide for guidance. Your job is
to offer suggestions for how to make the thesis clearer, how to make the writing
& grammar
clearer, and how to best support that thesis with examples from the film's
formal techniques.
3)
Bring your written comments on your partner's outline on hard copy to the
workshop. Exchange and discuss your written feedback on your partner's paper outline with your partner during Workshop
III in
class. Save all of your TA and partner's written comments; you will turn
them in to Dr. Bonner with the final version of your paper.
Your comments and your paper will be graded for their effort and
thoroughness.
Paper Workshop IV
1) Exchange your Textual Analysis Paper with your assigned partner
(listed on the class roll) before
the date on the schedule via email;
this new draft MUST include all of Dr. B's revisions from
the last draft. Copy this emailed document to Dr.
Bonner and the TAs as a Word attachment by this deadline too.
2) Print out, read, annotate, & edit your partner's paper before Workshop IV,
discerning at
least 3 substantive suggestions to improve the paper in addition to offering
detailed comments on the paper's C, MGS, and/or O. Refer to our
Comments Guide and Textual Analysis Paper
guidelines for guidance. (More comments are welcome; as always, your comments
and your effort on the assignment will be graded.)
3) Do NOT email these comments to your partner. Instead, bring a
printout of your typed up suggestions to submit to your
partner for
discussion during Workshop IV. Email
ONLY Dr. B & our TAs (NOT your partner) the 3 substantive suggestions that you propose for your
partner's paper before the date on the schedule.
Save all of your TA and partner's written comments; you will turn them in
to Dr. Bonner with the revision of your paper.
