Dr. Bob Welborn Retires After 35 Years

skip to content

Dr. Robert (Bob) Welborn began his tenure at Clayton State University in fall 1973 and retires this month after 35 years of teaching and broadening the cultural horizons of Clayton State students and faculty.

Bob’s biggest accomplishment in the international arena came in 2004 when Provost Dr. Sharon Hoffman approved the creation of the Office of International Education (now the Office of International Programs) and named Bob its director. Bob increased the number of students and faculty who participate in study abroad, facilitated the creation of several programs offered distinctly through Clayton State, and was instrumental in founding Clayton State’s Faculty Exchange program.

As he enters retirement, Bob intends to golf, canoe and reacquaint himself with fishing and hiking. He and his wife, Kathy, plan to build a home in their native South Carolina and, of course, see more of the world.

As he looks back on his 35 years at Clayton State, Bob phrases a goodbye fitting for one so well traveled... “It’s been a trip,” he says.
