Grignard Reaction
Week 1
Apparatus

Reaction of Magnesium with Bromobenzene to form Grignard Reagent

Reaction starts - It becomes cloudy and generates enough heat to boil the ether without additional heat being added.

Reaction mixture gets darker and the magnesium metal starts to disappear.

Reaction mixtures when Grignard reagent formation is complete.
Reaction of Grignard Reagent with Methyl Benzoate in Anhydrous Ether:

Solution immediately following addition of ester/ether mixture

Solution 10 minutes following addition of ester/ether mixture

Solution 20 minutes following addition of ester/ether mixture
Storing Grignard Reaction Mixture for Week 2:

Round bottom flask with drying tube stored in labeled beaker
Week 2
Neutralizing, isolating, and purifying Grignard Reaction Product:

Swirling with ether/dil. H2SO4 to dissolve the Grignard product

Grignard reaction mixture in Erlenmeyer flask

Ether layer in separatory funnel to be washed

Dried ether layer in round bottom flask before evaporation
Final Grignard Product
