Chapter 16 Learning Objectives:
  1. Be able to define:  aromatic compound, antiaromatic compound, nonaromatic compound, heterocylic aromatic compound, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon, Huckel's rule, resonance energy, aryl group.
  2. Be able to describe the stability of benzene.  Why does it not react like an alkene?
  3. Be able to classify a given molecule or ion as aromatic, antiaromatic, or nonaromatic.
  4. Be able to name a given aromatic compound using the IUPAC system of nomenclature or common names given in class.
  5. Be able to draw the structure of a aromatic compound given the IUPAC name or common names given in class.
  6. Be able to classify a disubstituted benzene as ortho, meta, or para
