General and Career Information
The B.S. degree in Biology has been designed in consultation with Georgia employers to fit present and emerging needs in the State of Georgia. The program features a unique emphasis on Bioregulatory Affairs/Science Management, Biomedical Applications, and Biotechnology/Biocomputing and . These areas represent the top concerns of area employers and are consistent with national hiring trends. The B.S. degree includes curriculum options that support three (3) of the top 25 fastest growing jobs in the United States (Office of Employment Statistics, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). More importantly, projected growth rates in Georgia for these fields exceed those for the U.S. as a whole (Georgia Department of Labor, Labor Market and Occupational Information, 1998).

Recommended Curriculum
The completion of the biology degree depends very strongly on the proper selection and sequencing of courses. While the choices provided in Areas A-E of the Core Curriculum are valid for all students, there are some special requirements for biology students and all choices are not equal in terms optimum sequencing order.
The first two years of the recommended biology curriculum complies with the approved Areas A-E for the undergraduate core. You should note that biology students do not receive degree credit in the core for any mathematics courses at a level lower than Pre-Calculus (MATH 1113).

Course Sequencing
Of special importance in the biology degree course sequencing are the required chemistry courses and their associated laboratories. The first of four (4) required chemistry courses (and their associated labs) must be taken in the first term of attendance to allow completion of the core curriculum (freshman and sophomore years) in four semesters without summer school attendance. In order, the four courses are CHEM 1211/1211L, CHEM 1212/1212L, CHEM 2411/2411L, and CHEM 2412/2412L.
