General and Career Information
Geology is the study of the Earth. As a professional science, it encompasses interests ranging from the study of minerals and rocks to the study of ancient life and life history. Geological topics include earthquakes, volcanoes, the bones of dinosaurs, the sands of long-vanished sea shores, the structures of ancient mountain belts, and the drifting of continents.
Geology also includes matters of social and economic importance: the location of economic resources, the recognition of geologic hazards such as landslides, the monitoring of environmental pollution, and the protection of water quality. Geologists are, in fact, among the primary workers engaged in studying and protecting the Earth's environment. Geologists work both outdoors and in the laboratory; the tools employed range from rock hammers, maps, and magnifying glasses, to electron microscopes, seismographs, and deep-sea submersibles.
The American Geological Institute maintains a site that provides career information for the geosciences.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics maintains detailed and current information on geology related careers.
Transfer Institutions
Students enrolled in the transfer program in Geology at Clayton State University often plan to transfer to other schools to obtain a bachelors or higher degree. Links to departments within the University System of Georgia that offer geology degrees at the bachelors level or higher are provided here:
| Institution | Geology Link | Degrees |
|---|---|---|
| Columbus State University | Department of Chemistry and Geology | B.S. |
| Georgia Institute of Technology | School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences | B.S., M.S., Ph.D. |
| Georgia Southern University | Department of Geology and Geography | B.A., B.S. |
| Georgia State University | Department of Geology | B.S., M.S. |
| State University of West Georgia | Department of Geosciences | B.A., B.S. |

Recommended Curriculum
Clayton State University does not offer any geology courses. To complete the transfer program. of study in Geology at Clayton State University, students must cross-register at another University System of Georgia institution to take the two (2) geology courses required in Area F of the geology core curriculum (see the list of institutions above).
The completion of transfer program of study in geology depends very strongly on the proper selection and sequencing of courses. While the choices provided in Areas A-E of the Core Curriculum are valid for all students, there are some special requirements for geology students and all choices are not equal in terms of transfer requirements or optimum sequencing order.
The recommended geology curriculum complies with the approved Areas A-E for the core. You should note that geology students do not receive degree credit in the core for any mathematics course at a level lower than pre-calculus (MATH 1113). If mathematics courses at levels lower than pre-calculus are required, the transfer program of study in Geology cannot be finished in four semesters - summer terms and/or additional semesters will be required.
To increase the probability of acceptance at transfer schools, the Principles of Chemistry sequence rather than the Principles of Biology sequence should be taken in Area D. Additionally, geology students must take the first course in calculus (MATH 1501) in Area D, if not taken in Area A.
The recommended curriculum for the transfer program of study in Geology is provided at the following link:
For students who took courses under the quarter system, the following link shows semester system course equivalents for the transfer program in Geology:
Course Sequencing
Because of the strong prerequisite dependencies for the required chemistry courses, it is absolutely mandatory that chemistry coursework begin in the first semester of attendance. Students who were undecided and failed to begin chemistry in their first terms cannot complete the transfer program in geology in four semesters - summer terms and/or additional semesters will be required.
