MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY:

The Master’s program in Clinical Psychology will prepare students to be competent, ethical practitioners of psychological services in the community. Students will develop skills in psychological assessment, and in a variety of therapeutic modalities, including individual, family, couples, and group therapy.  Students will be able to apply knowledge from various frameworks (e.g. cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, and humanistic) to a wide variety of psychological problems.  This program emphasizes learning to consider the uniqueness of each individual and the influence of culture and ethnicity when providing services to people from diverse backgrounds.  Students will be prepared to work in a broad range of mental health settings as well as to pursue doctoral level training in clinical or counseling psychology.

Recent Faculty Appearances and Activities

Dr. Donna McCarty

• Was selected Chair Elect of the Association of Heads of Departments of Psychology (affiliated with the Southeastern Psychological Association) at the November 2010 annual meeting - see http://ahdp.us for details.

Dr. Eric Bridges

• His article, "African American males, racial identity and academic achievement", will be published this summer in the Journal of African American Males in Education

• Attended the National Council of Black Studies Conference this March in Cincinnati, Ohio, discussing his research on stress, health and African Americans.

• Moderated a Student/Staff discussion of Social Justice as part of the Service Learning Series on Thursday January 20th.
• Recently had a movie review for District Nine published in PsycCRITIQUES (July 7, 2010, volume 55, release 27) entitled, This ain’t E.T.: Racist images in entertainment; A review of the film, District Nine.
• Is also working on an article with Dr. Sam Maddox on the educational and psychosocial needs of African American males.

Drs. Deborah Deckner and Samuel Maddox

• Co-presented a talk on March 4th at the 2011 SEPA Annual Meeting in Jacksonville, Florida.  Their talk is titled, 50 years and counting: The President’s panel on mental retardation

Dr. Kitty Deering

• Authored the Instructor's Manual to Accompany Ragin's Health Psychology: A Biopsychosocial Approach (2011) published by Prentice Hall.

Dr. Brian Goldman

• Co-authored an article that came out in June’s edition of Personality and Individual Differences (2010) titled "Dispositional Authenticity and Romantic Relationship Functioning"

Dr. Pinar Gurkas

• Co-authored the paper "Identification Using Biometric Technology: Issues and Attitudes", appearing in the Journal of Information Assurance and Security (JIAS)
• Co-authored the paper "Infant nutrition and secure base behavior at 12 and 18 months: An exploratory study," appearing in the January, 2011 issue of Infancy.

Dr. Antoinette Miller

• Was Clayton State's nominee for the FY12 Regents Teaching Excellence Award
• Presented "Seven Minutes of Sizzle: the 3 Rs of Motivating Online Students" at the ECORE Annual Meeting on May 12
• Recently joined the USG eCORE faculty
• Was Clayton State's nominee for the FY11 Regents Teaching Excellence Award
• Her chapter, "House and the Brain" is forthcoming in Wiley's House and Psychology (Fall 2011)

Dr. Samuel Maddox

• Continues to served as Program Evaluator with the Clayton County Adult Felony Drug Court

•  Presented a poster presentation for the Society for Personality and Social Psychology with Dr. Brian Goldman ,"Understanding Race Differences in Self-Esteem Level: The Role of Contingent Self-Esteem  & Authenticity”

•  Is collaborating with Hearts to Nourish Hope to secure grant funding for juvenile diversion program

•  Continues to collaborate with Dr. Deborah Deckner on the manuscript “50 Years and Counting: The Legacy the First President’s Panel on Mental Retardation” presented at the Southeastern Psychological Association Annual Conference in March 2011

•  Is finalizing a manuscript on “Making Sense of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder” for March 2011

•  Collaborating with Mrs. Cheryl Dunson on the design and implementation of her thesis “Impact of Parents on High School Students Success”

• Served as Faculty Facilitator for the Alternative Winter Break Service Project through the Department of Campus Life

Dr. Mario Norman

• Presented “The use of discussions to promote critical thinking skills in diverse collegiate classroom” at the 40th Annual Conference of the International Society for Exploring Teaching and Learning (ISETL) in Nashville, TN on October 7-9, 2010.

Dr. Celeste Walley-Jean

• As of June 27 2011, will be responsible for directing Integrative Studies
• Spoke at the 4th Annual African American Studies Symposium: African American Femininities: The Michelle Obama Effect at the University of Texas at San Antonio on April 14th (see http://colfa.utsa.edu/English/aass/index_files/AfricanAmericanStudiesSchedule.htm)
