First-Year Writing @ Clayton State University

Textbooks

The philosophy of the first-year writing program is that students’ writing should be the focus and texts of the class.  We also believe that students need instruction in reading a variety of genres and using those sources to produce effective writing (see the WPA Outcomes for First-Year Writing).  In our effort to provide quality instruction in writing, to keep the focus of the class on writing, and to keep textbook costs for students as low as possible, we have adopted one custom handbook and one reader for both semesters of first-year writing.

We currently use a custom handbook, Writing in the Digital Age: First Year Writing and Beyond. Clayton State University Third Edition (2011, Cengage; ISBN 1133440479, available ONLY through the Clayton State University Bookstore) for both English 1101 and English 1102.

Textbooks required for Fall 2011, Spring 2012, and Summer 2012 are:

Blakesley, David, Jeffrey Hoogeveen, and Mary R. Lamb. Writing in the Digital Age: First-Year Writing and Beyond,

Clayton State University, Third Edition. Cengage, 2011. ISBN 113-344-0479. Approx. $81.25. Available only through CSU Bookstore.

Connections: Readings for First-Year Writing. Cengage, 2011. ISBN 113-366-4458. Available only through CSU

Bookstore. Approx. $28.95.

Lamb, Mary R. First-Year Writing Guide. Clayton State University. Fountainhead P, 2011. ISBN 978-1-59-871-492-0.

Available only through CSU Bookstore. Approx. $23.68.

Your total cost for textbooks for both semesters is approximately $133.88, or $66.94 per semester.

These books will be used for BOTH English 1101 and English 1102, thus saving you money, so do not sell-back your book after 1101. In addition, you will find the handbook useful throughout your time at Clayton State.

Consult your instructor's syllabus for information on required books since one or two instructors use different books than the ones listed above.
