TEXT: CALCULUS CONCEPTS, An Informal Approach to the Mathematics of Change (2nd ed),
by LaTorre, Kenelly, Fetta, Harris, and Carpenter, 2001.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an informal study of differential and integral
Calculus of functions of one variable with decision applications for business
and social science.
PREREQUISITE:
Math 1101 or MATH 1111 (or equivalent mathematics placement score).
technology
PREREQUISITE
and computer requirement:
 | Clayton
College & State University requires
that students have ready access
throughout the semester to a notebook computer that meets faculty-approved
hardware and software requirements for the student's academic program. See
the website http://itpchoice.clayton.edu/
for full details of this policy. WE
WILL USE THE COMPUTER EXTENSIVELY IN CLASS (at
least once a week) and on tests. |
 |
Basic
computer skills are necessary to succeed in Math 1241.
CCSU offers Notebook 101 workshops on Basic
Computer Training and Using
E-Mail. If you do not have
the skills covered in both of these workshops, then it is strongly
recommended that you attend the workshop(s).
These skills will not be taught in Math 1241.

QUIZZES: Unannounced quizzes and
take home quizzes will be given. One quiz grade will be dropped, therefore
missed quizzes CANNOT BE MADE UP.
TESTS:
 | You
must use a pencil on all tests and quizzes. Papers submitted in
pen will not be accepted. |
 | If you miss a test, arrangements MAY be made to
take it. CALL ME IMMEDIATELY, preferably before the test is missed. NO
MAKE-UP TESTS will be given; if a test is missed, you MIGHT be allowed to
substitute the final exam score for the missing grade (this does NOT
happen automatically – you must talk to me about ANY missed tests). |
 | Test 4 will only be worth 50 points. |
FINAL EXAM:
 | The
Final Exam will be comprehensive.
|
 | No
student will be excused from taking the final exam, and only under unusual
circumstances will a student be allowed to take the exam at any time other
than the regularly scheduled time. Failure
to take the final exam will result in the grade of “F” for the course. |
ATTENDANCE:
Regular attendance is expected and necessary to understand the material. You are
responsible for all work whether you attend class or not. Roll will be taken and
will be used to determine final grades in borderline cases.
Technology
Etiquette:
The computer is used extensively in Math 1241.
When you come into class you should immediately set up your computer,
unless otherwise informed by your instructor.
The computer is to be used solely to enhance the learning atmosphere
pertinent to this course. Use of
the computer for non-instructional activities will not be permitted.
All
materials displayed on your computer AT ALL TIMES DURING CLASS must support the learning
experience in the classroom. This includes screen savers, wallpaper,
computer games, email, and internet access. Set the volume on your computer to a low setting.
RULES
FOR WRITTEN COMMUNICATION: Any e-mail sent to the instructor should state your
name and identify the class you are taking. For additional rules that must
be followed, refer to Etiquette
Rules for Communication.
STUDENT
BEHAVIOR in the CCSU Student Handbook: We will adhere to all policies
state in the CCSU Handbook regarding cheating, plagiarism, disruptive behavior
in class, etc. (Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Students guilty
of academic dishonesty will receive an F in the class. Academic dishonesty
includes, but is not limited to, giving and receiving information. This policy
will be enforced. No exceptions.)

to request accommodations should contact the Disability Services Coordinator,
Student Center 214, 770-961-3719, disabilityservices@mail.clayton.edu.
