Physics 1112 – Quiz 6b

Name  ________SOLUTION_____________________________

  1. A wire of length 1.00 m is moved at a constant speed 5.00 m/s across a perpendicular uniform magnetic field of 0.110 T by a force F as shown in the Figure. The resistor has a resistance of 30.0 Ohms, the resistance of all the wires is negligible.

    1. Find the emf induced in the circuit.

e = V B L = (5.00 m/s)(0.110 T) (1.00 m) = 0.550 V

    1. Find the current flowing in the circuit.

I  = e/R = (0.0550 V)/(30.0 W) = 0.0183 A

    1. Assuming zero friction, what is the magnitude of the force F?

F = I L B = (0.0183 A) (1.00 m) (0.110 T) = 0.00202 N

The direction of the current induced in the circuit is counterclockwise.
