<p><span style=3D'font-family:Arial'>2. <u>Theory</u>.</span></p>

<p><span style=3D'font-family:Arial'>a. In 1887, during his electromagnetic=
 wave
experiments, Heinrich Hertz discovered that under certain conditions light
striking a material causes electrons to be emitted - a phenomenon known as =
the
photoelectric effect. Detailed investigation of the photoelectric effect
conducted by Wilhelm <span class=3DSpellE>Hallwachs</span> and Philipp Lena=
rd
during the years 1886-1900 revealed some puzzling features that could not be
understood on the basis of classical optics. In particular, it was found th=
at:</span></p>

<p><span style=3D'font-family:Arial'>&nbsp;<span class=3DSpellE>i</span>. W=
hen the
monochromatic light fell on the surface of the material, <i>no</i>
photoelectrons were emitted unless the frequency of light was greater than =
some
minimum value called cutoff frequency (<i>f<sub>0</sub></i>) which depended=
 on
the material.</span></p>

<p><span style=3D'font-family:Arial'>ii. When the frequency <i>f</i> was gr=
eater
than the cutoff frequency, some electrons were emitted with significant amo=
unt
of kinetic energy.</span></p>

<p><span style=3D'font-family:Arial'>iii. The kinetic energy of photoelectr=
ons
was dependent on the frequency of the light but not on the light intensity,
while the magnitude of the photoelectric current was dependent on the inten=
sity
of light.</span></p>

<p><span style=3D'font-family:Arial'>b. In 1905, Albert Einstein provided t=
he
explanation of photoelectric effect. Using an assumption<span class=3DGramE=
>&nbsp;
proposed</span> earlier by Max Planck, Einstein postulated that a beam of l=
ight
consists of small packages of energy called photons with the energy of a ph=
oton
equal to&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span></p>
