PHYS 1112 - Introductory Physics
II
Lesson 17 - Reflection and
Refraction I
Study Assignment:
Study: Chapter 26, Sections 26.1, 26.5
Lesson notes:
In this this lesson we begin our study of optics by considering the laws of reflection and refraction (Snell's law).
Objectives
1. Understand the concepts of wavefronts and the ray approximation.
2. Know the law of reflection for light waves.
3. Understand the meaning of the terms in Snell's law and be able to apply the law at the interface between to media.
4. Understand and be able to use the concept of index of refraction.
Vocabulary:
wave and particle models
photon
wavefront
ray approximation
specular reflection
diffuse reflection
index of refraction
