PHYS 1111 - Introductory Physics I
Chapter 13 - Oscillations About Equilibrium

Study Assignment:

Chapter 13, Sections13.1 - 13.6

Lesson notes:

In this chapter we will study particular kind of periodic motion called simple harmonic motion. The most familiar examples of this motion are mass attached on a spring and simple pendulum.

Objectives:

1. Understand the concept of periodic motion and its key characteristics.

2. Understand the concept of simple harmonic motion.

3. Understand the connection between uniform circular motion and simple harmonic motion.

4. Be able to predict the period of a mass on a spring.

5. Be able to apply concept of conservation of energy to oscillatory motion.

6. Be able to describe motion of a simple pendulum.

Vocabulary:

period
frequency
angular frequency
restoring force

amplitude
