Computer Requirement:

Each CSU student is required to have ready access throughout the semester to a notebook computer that meets faculty-approved hardware and software requirements for the student's academic program. Computer Skill Prerequisites:

• Able to use the Windows 95^TM operating system.
• Able to use a the Microsoft Word 97^TM word processing program.
• Able to send and receive e-mail using the Outlook Express^TM program.
• Able to use a Web browser.

In-class Use of Student Notebook Computers:

Student notebook computers will be used on-campus in every laboratory period in this course.

Course Objectives:

• • To learn the basic laws of modern physics and how to apply them.

  To learn how to use the scientific process and gain facility with experimental techniques.

Biology outcomes:

PHYS 1112L supports outcomes 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the biology major:

• Outcome 2. Mastery of a broad range of basic lab skills applicable to biology.
• Outcome 3.  Knowledge of physical science, mathematics, and statistics required to support an understanding of biology.
• Outcome 4.  Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a clear concise manner.
• Outcome 5.  Ability to collect, evaluate and interpret scientific data, and employ critical thinking to solve problems in biological science and supporting fields.

None required. However, the PHYS 3650 course text, Walker , Physics, 3^rd edition, Prentice Hall, 2007, is an important reference.

Grading:

Mid-term Progress Report

Due to the relatively small number of laboratory reports that will have been returned by mid-term, no mid-term grade will be reported for this course.  Students making unsatisfactory progress will be contacted individually by the instructor before mid-term.

Course Schedule:

The schedule of lab topics is provided at in the separate lab schedule. The schedule also contains links to laboratory advanced sheets for each lab. Students should print out the advanced sheets and familiarize themselves with lab requirements prior to coming to lab.

Course Policies:

Students must abide by policies in the Clayton State University Student Handbook, and the Basic Undergraduate Student Responsibilities.

Attendance is required for lab and examination periods. Any absence must be accompanied by a written excuse from a doctor. Without excuse, a grade of zero points may be assigned for the missed work.

While lab data may be taken in lab groups, all work on laboratory reports must be individual work, including word processing, spreadsheet development, diagrams and graphs. A grade of zero will be assigned to all persons involved in copied work. Additionally, disciplinary action may be initiated for academic dishonesty.

Laboratory reports are due at the beginning of the meeting one week after the lab was conducted. Late submission of the laboratory reports will result in a grade penalty of 10% of the available points per working day (Monday through Friday) that the assignment is late. Late reports will not be accepted after the final course meeting (Monday, December 1, 2008).

Visitors (friends, children, etc.) are strictly prohibited from attending lab without the permission of the instructor.

No smoking, eating or drinking is permitted at any time in the lab room.

Any type of activity that is considered dishonest by reasonable standards may constitute academic misconduct. The most common forms of academic misconduct are cheating and plagiarism.  All instances of academic dishonesty will result in a grade of zero for the work involved.  All instances of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Office of Student Conduct. Important dates:

Laboratory report due dates: weekly on Fridays, one week after the laboratory is performed with the exception of the last laboratory report of the course will be completed during the final lab period.

Last day to withdraw without academic penalty: Friday, October 10, 2008.
