Physics 3650 – Quiz 11

Name  _______SOLUTION______________________________

  1. Find the energy absorbed by a 68.0-kg person who is exposed to 52.0 mrem of a particles with RBE of 15.

AD (rem) = AD (rad) x RBE

AD (rad) = AD (rem) / RBE

AD = (52.0 x 10 –3 rem) / 15 = 3.47 x 10-3 rad = 3.47 x 10 –5 Gy

AD = E / m

E = AD m

E = (3.47 x 10-5 J/kg) (68.0 kg) = 236 x 10-5 J = 0.00236 J

  1. If the RBE of the a particles is increased, does the energy absorbed stay the same, increase, or decrease? EXPLAIN.

Energy absorbed does not depend on RBE factor, so it stays the same UNLESS you require the total exposure (52.5 mrem) to stay the same. If you require the

exposure to stay the same, the energy absorbed decreases.
