Home Up One Two Three Four

Most maps use certain conventions

  1. North is usually towards the top of the page
  2. Lines drawn in north-south and east-west  directions can be used to locate specific points on the map. (more about this later)
  3. A "legend" will contain information about symbols used on a particular map and other information as well.
  4. Lines mark the division between land and water; colors, a scattering of dots, or other markings also may be used to indicate a coastline. Lines mark the courses of rivers.
  5. Colors, shading or other symbols may indicate other landforms, such as mountains.
  6. Dots (or similar shapes) mark the location of cities
  7. Lines mark the boundaries between political units such as countries or states.

bulletLook at your maps and try to locate examples of each of the features listed above on more than one map. Various maps may have all, some, or none of these. Think about the reasons for including or omitting information about a particular map.
