A "legend" will contain information about symbols
used on a particular map and other information as well.
Lines mark the division between land and water; colors, a
scattering of dots, or other markings also may be used to indicate
a coastline. Lines mark the courses of rivers.
Colors, shading or other symbols may indicate other landforms,
such as mountains.
Dots (or similar shapes) mark the location of cities
Lines mark the boundaries between political units such as
countries or states.
Look at your maps and try to locate examples of each of the
features listed above on more than one map. Various maps may
have all, some, or none of these. Think about the reasons for
including or omitting information about a particular map.
