Textbook Assignments
Your textbook is actually two different books, bound in one volume.
The first is by Gillon, the second by Hollitz.
We will begin with Gillon--first a few selections from chapters 16 and 17,
and then we will use full chapters from 18 to 32, but I suggest that you also have an
early look at
the last two chapters, which will help shed light on the daily
news. We will be talking about the daily news from time to time.
Notice that every chapter in the Gillon book is divided into subsections (in
most cases there are 4). If you begin the habit of reading one section
every day (take Sunday off, if you prefer) you will finish the book well before
the end of the term. Because the course moves roughly chronologically, you
should be able to keep ahead of the lectures in most cases.
There is a "quiz" on each Gillon chapter in WebCT. Do each one as soon
as you can after you finish reading. You are responsible for finishing these by
the last class of the semester. These tests are intended to help you
study the chapter. They are open-book and two hours in length. Each
student will receive a unique question set.
You also can read the first chapter of the Hollitz book. We will use
four chapters--1, 4, 9 and 13. They will be discussed in class and will provide
the material for an essay question on each exam. These chapters deal with
certain aspects of the way history is written.
