Class meetings

Will include lectures and discussion of readings on related  topics. and regular discussions of current events. Attendance for the entire class period is required.
Objective: regular and timely attendance will encourage good habits of work. 
At home In addition to reading your textbook and taking WebCT quizzes, remember that you are on your own to preview the PowerPoints and take notes to bring to class.

Chapter  review quizzes (averaged)  10 Taken as homework on WebCT. As you finish each chapter, take the 20-question quiz to check the quality of your reading.  Each student will receive a unique selection of questions from a larger quiz bank.  After you begin a review quiz, you will have 2 hours to complete it.  You will have an opportunity to retake this quiz, with the two scores to be averaged. Deadline is the last day of classes in the term, but you should do them as soon as you finish reading. 
Objective: allow a student to evaluate reading effectiveness; verifies that the student has examined each chapter.
Lecture review quizzes (averaged) 20 Taken as homework on WebCT, this will be a 30-minute quiz offered shortly after the topic is completed.  You may use using your notes.  You will be provided a 3-day window to complete the quiz.  There will be one make-up opportunity at the end of the semester.
Objective: allows student to evaluate note taking effectiveness; verifies student's active attention to classroom presentations and discussion.
Mid Term & Final 30 Based on lecture and textbook content and also on assigned chapters in Thinking Through the Past  Comprehensive over the half semester.
Objective: verifies student acquisition of course information. Essays prepared in advance provide experience in writing and critical thinking.
May include essay, map and objective questions. May be administered via WebCT.

Museum visit / Book Review 10 Choose one of the following, and file a report via WebCT
bulletVisit the Atlanta History Center   (or other US History museum or historic site that relates to US history after 1877; clear choice with Dr. Kemp) and file a 250-500 word report.

bulletBy special permission: read a suitable non-fiction work on American History after 1877 and file a 3-page review. 

Objective: intellectual enrichment by exposure to materials not available in the classroom; experience in writing and critical thinking.

Two bonus opportunities

Add a maximum of 10 bonus points to your total points earned on exams before they are averaged at the end of the semester Only one bonus point report may be submitted in each half of the semester. 

Various enriching opportunities arise from time to time during a semester.  Students will be offered the opportunity to submit  reports on their attendance. 

Perfect attendance will earn bonus points if you have not submitted a second bonus report.  There is a 1-point penalty applied to the second exam for each unexcused absence.

Bonus opportunities are be posted on this website or may be announced in class. Some items are on reserve in the library.; some are on the History web page.

Objective: expose students to a variety of opportunities for intellectual growth outside of the classroom; reward initiative.
