Research Interest:

My academic interests include the areas of environmental and inhalation toxicology.   My research involves 1) examining the roles of cytokines, chemokines, and antioxidant enzymes in mediating acute lung injury 2) developing  "state of the art" in vitro tests for evaluating the toxicity associated with environmental agents.

Current Research Project:

In conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), I am developing tissue culture models to evaluate the toxicity associated with various chemicals and radiation.  During space missions, astronauts are potentially exposed to a complex environment of radiation and chemicals.  Many of these agents are known to be mutagenic and carcinogenic to humans.  The risk associated with long-term space exploration is unknown.  The effects to various organ systems must be determined.  The overall goal of this project is to develop more tissue-like model systems to evaluate the toxicity associated with space exploration and extrapolate the risk to humans.  These newly developed models can be used by researchers to evaluate the exposure to potentially toxic agents.
