Foreign Language Requirement

The Georgia Board of Regents requires students who earn a BA in History to complete at least six (6) hours of a foreign language sequence.

According to the Clayton State University Catalog:
“Competence is required in a language other than English, through the 2002-level in the language used to fulfill College Preparatory Curriculum requirements or through the 1002-level in a new language.”

In order to satisfy the foreign language requirement, students who major in history at CSU have three options:

  1. Complete a 6-hour sequence at the intermediate college level in the same language used to fulfill CPC requirements.
  2. For example, if you took two years of Spanish in high school, then you should take SPAN 2001 and SPAN 2002. (If you feel you need a refresher course, you may take SPAN 1999 first, then SPAN 2001 and SPAN 2002.)

  3. Complete a 6-hour sequence at the introductory level of a “new language.”
  4. For example, if you completed two years of German in high school, then you should take SPAN or FREN 1001 and SPAN or FREN 1002.

  5. Complete 3 hours of SPAN or FREN 1002 and 3 hours of SPAN or FREN 2001, if a new language.
  6. In other words, you completed two years of German in high school, but now you would like to try a new language. So, if you pass an exemption examination for FREN or SPAN 1001 in the University Testing Center, you can enroll in FREN or SPAN 1002 first, followed by FREN or SPAN 2001.
