Journal Assignment

Each student will turn in a journal consisting of six entries. The journal will include the historical visit report, the classroom presentation, and four other entries chosen from articles, documentaries, etc. I will be glad to discuss ideas for journal entries other than those discussed in this handout. Unless specified otherwise, the journal is to be typed and all entries are to be at least two pages in length.

Historical Visit – Entries should explain what students saw and what they learned in a visit to a site representing some aspect of the course subject matter. The following sites are pre-approved: Kennesaw National Battlefield Park, Chickamauga National Battlefield Park, the Turning Point Exhibit at the Atlanta History Center, the Cyclorama, and Picketts Mill State Battlefield Park. I will be glad to discuss other sites that might be appropriate for this assignment. To be approved, exhibits and/or guided tours must be available at the site. Also, the visit must be made this quarter to qualify.

The historical visit entry should contain a heading listing the site visited and the date of the visit. I am interested in students’ perceptions of what they learned rather than simply a detailed description of what they saw. See the Historical Visit for more guidelines concerning this requirement.

Take along a friend or a classmate. I think you will enjoy the visit.

Format – The remaining entries should be selected from among articles in historical publications; film documentaries; and reviews on artifacts, web sites, preservation activities, personalities, events, and battles of the period we are studying. Documentaries selected should be an hour or more in length. As a general rule, films do not qualify for this assignment. Entries selected should come from a variety of publications, printed and electronic, and documentaries. Each journal should include at least one entry from a resource on the Internet and no journal should contain more than three documentaries. Students may include more than one historical visit if desired. Students are welcome to focus their entries on a particular time frame, event, or personality.

The entry should explain what the student learned from the article, documentary, or Internet resource, etc., rather than simply describing the content. Each entry should contain a heading including bibliographical information. The first page of the journal should provide a table of contents. All entries should be detailed, grammatically correct, carefully organized, and insightful. The journal should consist of 81/2" by 11" pages stapled together and placed inside a manila folder. No notebooks or plastic binders will be accepted.

Grading: The historical visit will count twenty-five points; all other entries will count fifteen. Grading will be based on content, effective writing, and neatness. Provided students have followed these instructions carefully, grades on journals tend to be higher than grades on tests.

Journals are due on Tuesday, November 25th. Late papers will be penalized five points for each day the papers is late.
