HMSV 3010:  Introduction to Human Services

An analysis of the social needs addressed by human service agencies and an overview of the historical background, development, purposes, career patterns, ethics, and organization of such agencies with emphasis on the not for profit sector. 
[Prerequisite:  PSYC 1101 or SOCI 1101.  Also recommended are SOSC 2501 and PSYC 2103.]

 

HMSV 3230: Human Services in Multicultural Context

Exploration of how cultural diversity influences the structure and delivery of human services both locally and globally. Reviews services provided by nonprofit/NGO organizations as well as those provided by governmental agencies and the United Nations.
 

HMSV 3300: Community-Based Development

Study of factors influencing the socioeconomic and interpersonal health of neighborhoods and larger communities. Using a case studies approach, topics include group/organizational initiatives, internal versus external change agents, leadership issues, and advocacy.
 

HMSV 3501:  Organization & Administration of Human Service Agencies

A comprehensive analysis of the role and function of a human service agency management professional. Topics include skills and techniques in the areas of planning, staffing, budgeting, volunteer coordination, risk management, community relations, and advisory or governing board interaction.  
[Prerequisite:  PSYC 1101 or SOCI 1101.  Also recommended are SOSC 2501 and PSYC 2103.]
 

HMSV 4201: Nonprofit Promotion & Funding

A survey of techniques and issues in marketing and fundraising. Topics include designing print-based promotional materials, creating websites for nonprofit organizations, sources of philanthropic gifts, motivations for giving, preparing the case for support, setting targets, and establishing fund raising budgets.
[Prerequisite: HMSV 3501 with a minimum grade of C.]

 

HMSV 4490: Internship/Practicum in Human Services I

A directed and supervised internship or practicum.  Requires permission of program coordinator and the Director of Experiential Learning. [Applicants will be expected to have successfully completed HMSV 3010 and HMSV 3501.]  

If you are uncertain about what you'd like to do for an internship, you may want to scan the list of internship sites at http://a-s.clayton.edu/harrison/4490/internshipsites.htm or United Way Atlanta's list of organizations at http://211online.unitedwayatlanta.org/.  An internship must be different from a student's regular employment. 

To formally set up an internship, students must print out and fill out both of the following: Student Application Form and Learning Agreement Form.  If you need assistance, contact the professor well in advance of the first week of class, since schedules can get hectic after the semester begins. Students must submit the completed and signed forms to Dr. Harrison before the first meeting of the course or they will be dropped from the class.  
 

HMSV 4500: Senior Seminar/Internship in Human Services II

In this capstone experience students will carry out a major project in an internship/practicum setting, prepare a written report on the project illustrating how it reflects the outcomes of the program, and share the results with fellow seminar members. Students wishing to take HMSV 4500 must submit a project proposal to Dr. Harrison prior to enrolling in the course.  The proposal should include the following:

SOSC 2501:  Survey of Social Science & Contemporary Issues

An interdisciplinary survey of the social sciences with emphasis upon methods of inquiry used to examine America's contemporary social, economic, political and international problems.
