The Georgia Association of Historians Executive Board passed the following resolution regarding funding for the Georgia Archives:

Whereas, the Georgia Archives has experienced a 40% reduction in its budget, which has resulted in an 80% reduction in staff;

Whereas, this reduction has reduced the Georgia Archives to the fewest hours of any such public facility in the nation;

Whereas, these few hours of service to the public have severely, negatively impacted the ability of researchers including professors and students, government officials and staff, attorneys and paralegals, developers and engineers, journalists and filmmakers, historians and genealogists, and others to access research materials and get their work done in a timely manner;

Whereas, these cuts have diminished this once nationally respected institution to a shadow of its former self;

Whereas, these cuts have forced the elimination of programs and services which served both private citizens and public officials, who should have ready access to their public records;

Whereas, further cuts will prevent the Georgia Archives from fulfilling its mission to the states citizens, taxpayers, tourists, and guests and increase the long-term costs to the State of Georgia;

Whereas, the Georgia Archives is a singularly important repository and resource that helps Georgians know who we have been and to what we aspire;

Whereas, the Georgia Archives has the potential to provide unique programs to promote the states historical tourism economy, contribute to the professional workforce development, and to support both local governmental and private non-profit historical and cultural heritage institutions across the state;

Resolved, that the Georgia Association of Historians Executive Board opposes any additional cuts to the budget of the Georgia Archives;

Resolved, that the Georgia Association of Historians Executive Board fully supports the restoration of state funding sufficient to staff the facility and open its doors to the public at least five full days per week, pay its rent, and rejuvenate programs and services valuable to the citizens and taxpayers of Georgia.

Resolved, that the Georgia Association of Historians Executive Board encourages citizens to contact their legislators to express their support for the Georgia Archives.

Institute for Editing Historical Documents

The 2012 Summer Institute for Editing Historical Documents will be held 59 August at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Institute will be funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission through a grant to the Association for Documentary Editing.
