Dr. Michelle Furlong is an associate professor of biology and the head of the Department of Natural Sciences at Clayton State University.

One of her academic interests include microbial ecology of soil ecosystems. Her research interests are focused on the diversity and phylogeny of prokaryotes found in soil ecosystems as determined by 16S ribosomal DNA and nutritional analyses.

Dr. Furlong has recently began mentoring a student research project that involves investigating fecal coliform contamination in the watershed surrounding CSU.  The research group is attempting to trace the source of fecal coliforms found in Jesters Creek and Swan Lake by analyzing their antibiotic resistance patterns.

Dr. Furlong serves as an advisor for students majoring in Biology (B.S.).  If you are interested in the Pre-Veterinary area of emphasis see Dr. Furlong's Pre-Vet Advisement Web Page.
