Catalog Description:

BIOL4999A: The purposes of this class are to assess the biology degree program and to assist students in seeking employment or further schooling. Students are required to attend three class meetings. Students will participate in a seminar on how to prepare for job searches and graduate and/or professional school. Students will complete a series of surveys to assess the quality of the biology degree program. Students will take a two-hour standardized subject test in biology to assess their knowledge in biology. Students will also participate in an individually scheduled senior exit interview. A fee is required to pay for the standardized exam. Current fee is $26.

BIOL4999B: The purposes of this class are to assess the biology degree program and to assist students in seeking employment or further schooling. Students are required to attend two class meetings. Students will participate in a seminar on how to prepare for job searches and graduate and/or professional school. Students will complete a series of surveys to assess the quality of the biology degree program. Students will also participate in an individually scheduled senior exit interview.

Course prerequisite and co-requisite:

Prerequisites: BIOL 3200, BIOL 3250, BIOL 3380, BIOL 3500, BIOL3650, BIOL 4100, BIOL 4201 (must be taken the final semester prior to graduation).

Computer Requirement:

Each CCSU student is required to have ready access throughout the semester to a notebook computer that meets faculty-approved hardware and software requirements for the student's academic program. Computer Skill Prerequisites:

Able to use the Windows operating system

Able to use Microsoft Word

Able to send and receive e-mail using your CCSU account

Able to attach and retrieve attached files via email

Able to use a Web browser.

In-class Use of Student Notebook Computers:

Student notebook computers will not be used in this course.

Course Activities:

Prepare student for graduate school, jobs or professional school.
Collect data to assess program learning outcomes for the Biology degree. Students will take the Biology Fields Test and will be given an exit interview and survey.

Learning Outcomes:

The purpose of this course is to collect data to asses the program learning outcomes for the Biology degree. There are no program or course outcomes for this course.

Come to one of these sessions listed above or come see Dr. Furlong before 8/21 in person. If you don't show then you will be turned in as a no-show. This meeting will last about 40 minutes.

Come to one of these sessions to take the Biology fields test and try to make a score above the 50th percentile. IF you miss the test you will be unable to graduate as you will receive an unsatisfactory grade.

Neglecting to complete ALL of the following: Biology Fields Test, Senior Exit Interview, and laboratory and computer skills surveys.

Mid-term Progress Report:

No midterm grade will be given in this course. The last day to withdraw without academic penalty is Friday Oct. 10.

Course Policies

Attendance is REQUIRED at all class meetings. Attendance will be taken at each class meeting. If you cannot make a class meeting and have a good excuse you MUST contact the instructor and make arrangements to make up the work you missed. You must have an excused absence to be given the opportunity to make up the work. All work must be completed before you can pass the course successfully and graduate with a BS in Biology from CSU. Any unexcused absence or work that is not made up by the end of the semester will result in a grade of a U.

Any type of activity that is considered dishonest by reasonable standards may constitute academic misconduct. The most common forms of academic misconduct are cheating and plagiarism. All instances of academic dishonesty will result in a grade of a U.
