Guest Speaker

Karen Gilpin Thomas

The first Clayton State University Women’s Forum Luncheon of the 2008-2009 academic year is being held in conjunction with the University's Constitution Day activities.

Karen Gilpin Thomas is the Director of the Gwinnett County Legal Department.  The mission of the Department is to deliver high-quality legal services at a reasonable cost to Gwinnett County and its citizens, elected officials, managers, and staff, authorities, and related organizations. Thomas is the first African-American female to serve as the Gwinnett County Attorney, which is the lead attorney for the County.

She received a bachelor's degree in political science from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas at Austin.  An experienced attorney in both the private and public sectors, she began her legal career with the law firm of King and Spalding.  Thomas made her way to the Gwinnett County Law Department in 1989 as an Assistant county Attorney.  She served as Deputy County Attorney in January 1995 and was named Gwinnett County Attorney in March 1999.

Thomas is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Gwinnett County Bar Association and state and federal trial and appellate courts.  She is a 1999 graduate of Leadership Gwinnett and continues her involvement with the Leadership Gwinnett program.  She currently serves as an officer of the Local Government Section of the State Bar of Georgia.

With her finger on the pulse of a thriving county in metropolitan Atlanta, she says, “My work is always interesting – there is never a boring day.”  Whether she is communicating with the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, preparing and reviewing contracts and other legal proposals, preparing the Board agenda, or leading the legal team of the Law Department, Thomas keeps her vision in mind:  to improve the quality of life for all.  She exemplifies civic engagement in one of the most pivotal areas affecting her community.  Her motivation and enthusiasm provide inspiration, and she offers insight into the personal and professional challenges of her career.

All faculty and staff who attend must pay for their attendance at the luncheon; exceptions are permitted only for students who wish to hear the speaker without purchasing the luncheon.

The Women’s Forum mission strives for a wonderful meal, the company of colleagues, and a superb speaker.
