SCI 1901 - Energy

Instructions for Report on Home Heating Audit

General. As indicated in the course syllabus, each student enrolled in SCI 1901E is required to submit a home heating audit report. The submission consists of two parts: the home heating audit calculations and a written analysis of the results of the calculations. The entire report (both parts) carries a weight of 100 points.  This handout provides instructions for the analysis portion. Instructions and forms for the calculation portion are provided separately.

Analysis. After completing the calculation portion of the home heating audit you will address three areas in your report:

a. Discuss possible reasons for any discrepancy between the calculated heating costs and the actual heating costs derived from your utility bills. Examine any assumptions you made to perform the audit calculations.

b. Discuss the methods you would recommend to reduce your heating costs. This should not be a listing of the various energy conservation methods. It should be directly related to the calculations of your heating audit. Examine the results of your audit. Identify the major sources of heat loss.

c. Suggest actions that can be taken to address the major heat loss problems revealed by your audit calculations. Your suggestions to address the major heat loss problems must be supported by estimates of cost and pay-back time.

Report format. The report will be type-written, double-spaced on standard 8 1/2" by 11" paper. A copy of the home heating audit calculations must be included with your report. The report will be no less than two pages in length and no more than four pages in length (not including the copy of the home heating audit calculations).

Due date.  The home heating audit with its associated report are due (as announced in course syllabus) on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the beginning of class.
