Home Heating Audit


This document provides a very simple example home, consisting of only two rooms, used to introduce SCI 1901E students to the types of calculations that are required for the Home Heating Audit during a class period.

Example home description:

1. dimensions and orientation: see diagram below.

2. on uninsulated, unheated crawl space.

3. wall construction:

4" concrete brick
2" x 4" studded walls
3 and 1/2" fiberglass insulation
1/2" sheetrock

4. ceiling with 12" fiberglass insulation

5. windows - single pane

6. doors - 1 and 2/3" solid core wood

7. insulated heating ducts

8. average insulated home, well-maintained

9. two occupants

10. thermostat set at 70°F all the time

11. located near Atlanta, GA

12. energy source is natural gas at a cost of $1.38/therm

13. water heater is not located in a heated area

14. ceiling height is 10' throughout
