    20 gal of gasoline

Find:

    pounds of coal with same heating value as 20 gal of gasoline

Science:

    1 gallon of gasoline has a heating value of 1.24x10⁵ Btu

    1 ton of coal has a heating value of 25x10⁶ Btu  

Solve:

    E_coal = E_gas

    E_gas = (20 gal)(1.24x10⁵ Btu/gal) = 2.48x10⁶ Btu

    W_coal = (2.48x10⁶ Btu)/(25x10⁶ Btu/ton) = 0.992 tons

     W_coal =  (0.992 tons)(2000 lb/ton) = 198 lb
