Interested in CMS?

We recommend the following to students planning to major in Communication and Media Studies.

  1. Immediately declare your major as “pre-CMS.”
  2. Do not take the one-hour speech courses COMM 1001 and COMM 1002. CMS requires the three-hour version, COMM 1110.
  3. Take the following courses early in your college career:
    • ENGL 1101 English Composition I
    • ENGL 1102 English Composition II
    • CMS 2100 Introduction to Film
    • COMM 1110 Spoken Communication
Note that you must earn a combined GPA of 2.5 or better in these four courses before you can be admitted to CMS.
  4. Begin your required language sequence early. (Most students begin with SPAN 1002.)
  5. Take the Regents' Test and the CMS writing assessment before reaching 45 total hours.
  6. Apply to the CMS program as soon as you are eligible. Electronic application forms are available from this web site. Paper copies are available in A&S 110.
