From 1975 to 1977 he was a tenor with the Columbus (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Chamber Chorus, Columbus Opera Company and Eastman Opera Under the Stars. In 1981 he was the bass trombonist for the Ohio Light Opera Orchestra in Wooster, Ohio. From 1982 to 1985 he performed with the Greensboro (N.C.) Symphony Orchestra and Brass Quintet as well as performing with the Winston Salem Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony and major entertainers such as Helen Reddy, Ben Vereen, Glen Campbell and Judi Collins. Mr. Vokes performed on bass trombone with the Command Band of the Air Force Reserve from 1985 to 1990. They performed more than 600 concerts per year and toured throughout the Southeast, Azores and Canada. He was a member of the 530th Air National Guard Band at Dobbins ARB, Georgia from 1990 to November 2005. Mr. Vokes performed on all low brass instruments with this group on tours throughout Georgia, Florida, West Virginia, the Azores and the Dominican Republic. His college students regularly participate in GMEA All-College band. Former students have gone on to teaching positions in Georgia schools and graduate programs in Georgia and Illinois. His preparatory students participate in GMEA Honors bands, festivals and the Governors Honors program. He is a full time elementary band director for Dekalb County Schools in the Lithonia, Georgia area. In addition to his position at CSU, Mr. Vokes free-lances on tenor and bass trombone, euphonium and tuba with area church orchestras and the Macon Symphony Orchestra. |
