Other Bat Labs

This page last updated April 19, 2004

I recently was invited down to Auburn, where I got to meet with a bunch of great bat people and I also got to see their colony of big brown bats.  Here's a picture of me holding one of their bats - she was a little grumpy about being grabbed, but actually took it pretty well.

Here is a different bat scrabbling around on my glove...

The Auburn bat colony has the bats housed together.  Here you can see a number of female big brown bats together in the corner of one room.  They are hiding behind metal screening that lets them hang easily.

Here's a picture of a single bat on the mesh.  Notice the bands on her wing.  Each bat has a unique combination of colors and numbers to that they can be kept track of individually.

They also give them crevices to climb into so that they can move between different areas when they want.  The picture on the left shows a bat crammed into a crevice, while in the picture on the right, there is one bat in the crevice, and a second one hanging right next to it.
