Can I use my computer in the classroom?

This page last updated 04/03/2007

Because CSU is a notebook university, it is common for students to bring their computers with them to school every day.  If you have your computer with you it is natural to consider using it during class.  Many students use their laptops for taking notes and in many classes its required that you use the computer to run various pieces of software.  However, you need to be aware of what uses for your computer are appropriate in the classroom.  The first thing you should do is check with your instructor to see what is allowed in your classroom.

Use of your computer to take notes or to view web sites provided by your instructor are acceptable uses.  However, many students feel that any use of their computer in class is appropriate.  Here are some examples of activities that are generally not appropriate during class time.

You should check with your instructor to determine what activities are and are not allowed in your class.  You should also be aware that your instructors are quite good at detecting when you are using your computer inappropriately.  This is particularly noticeable in courses where you aren't involved in large amounts of note-taking.  You should seriously consider how you are using your computer in class.  If you are tempted to use it for inappropriate activities, it would probably be better not to tempt yourself!
