The Research Project—English 1101

Stereotypes and Stereotyping

We have begun our research exploration with the reading and discussion of Brent Staples' essay and book excerpt.  For your research project, think about the ways we group, classify, and stereotype our fellow man.  Choose one area/aspect of stereotyping that you would like to research for your project.  Although we can readily think of some groups who are often stereotyped, I encourage you to think beyond your personal experiences and explore some less obvious ways we make assumptions about each other.

The research project will be a compilation of several connected sections presented in the following order:

        1.  title page  (use the APA sample on p. 269 with changes as noted in the format requirements below)

        2.  a reflected writing on a personal experience with stereotyping (you did the first draft of this in class on Wednesday, October 21)

        3.  a proposal about the area of stereotyping you have chosen to research (initial copy due for approval Wednesday, November 4)

        4.  a introduction for the proposed paper with a clear thesis

        5.  an annotated bibliography with a minimum of four academic sources  (use edu or org, not com, for these)

Your annotated bibliography should focus on 4 areas:  The keywords you used to find the source, the search engine you used, the reason you

chose the source, and how it supports your topic.  A good guide for length is 5-7 sentences.

        6.  highlighted copies of each of the sources --or pertinent passages cut and pasted from the sources with proper citations and page numbers on the

pasted pages (these should be placed in the folder pocket)

        7.  Turnitin receipt

Format Requirements:

Folder with center brads.  Please use a proper 3-hole punch for this project.  No loose papers other than the source copies.

Title page:  last name 1 in upper right corner, title of project, your name, my name, date centered on page  (no running head as shown on p. 269)

Final copies of all of the project parts in the order listed  (even if you have turned them into me separately-- i.e. the proposal)

Appropriate titles for each section above (the proposal should be in memo format just like you turned in to me)

Continuous pagination beginning with the title page

         12-point font

         Double-spaced

MLA format (I know MLA doesn't use a title page or a bibliography; however, use MLA style page number formatting)

         Minimum of 4 academic sources

Submission to turnitin with receipt in folder

Due Date:  Monday, November 23
