PHYS 2211L - Principles of Physics Laboratory I

Lab 1 - Introduction to the ExcelTM Spreadsheet Program,
Measurement and Error Propagation

Study Assignment:

Read: Advanced Sheet for Lab 1
Read:
Propagation of Errors Supplement

Lesson notes:

This laboratory provides an introduction to measurement, measurement error, propagation of error and the use of the ExcelTM spreadsheet program.

Objectives:

1. Become familiar with the use of the triple beam balance, ruler and vernier caliper.

2. Be able to estimate the uncertainty in a single measurement.

3. Understand the difference between systematic and random errors.

4. Be able to apply the rules for propagation of error.

5. Understand the significant figure rules for reporting a result of a measurement.

6. Be able to apply the definitions of percent discrepancy and percent fractional error to determine the dominant type of error in a measurement.

7. Become familiar with basic features and capabilities of the ExcelTM spreadsheet program.

Vocabulary:

accuracy
precision
percent discrepancy
percent fractional error
