PHYS 2211 - Principles of Physics I
Lesson 2 - One-Dimensional Motion I

Study Assignment:

Chapter 2, Sections 2.1 - 2.4; Appendix B.6 - B.7

Lesson notes:

This lesson introduces the topic of kinematics, the description of how objects move through space (but not why). The lesson introduces a number of key concepts and terms that will be used throughout the entire course. It is critical that you have a firm understanding of this lesson.

Objectives:

1. Be able to define displacement, velocity and acceleration.

2. Understand the difference between velocity and speed.

3. Be able to calculate and/or graph x vs t, vx vs t, and ax vs t when given only one of the three relationships.

Vocabulary:

particle
displacement
average velocity
instantaneous velocity
speed
average acceleration
instantaneous acceleration

Homework:

TP: 2-1, 2-12, 2-13
