PHYS 2211 - Principles of Physics I
Lesson 15 - Work and Energy I

Study Assignment:

Chapter 7, Sections 7.1 to 7.3
Appendix B.7

Lesson notes:

Work and energy are fundamental concepts in physics. In this lesson we will develop the definition of work and learn how to apply it. The concept of work is the first step in producing an alternate method for handling problems in mechanics. This new method will avoid the use of vectors!

Objectives:

1. Be able to calculate the work done by each force acting on a body and the net work done by the resultant force.

2. Be able to calculate the work done by a varying force in one dimension.

3. Given a graph of force in one dimension versus position, be able to calculate the work done by the force.

4. Know and be able to apply the properties of the scalar (dot) product.

Vocabulary:

work
scalar (dot) product
Hooke's law

Homework:

TQ: 7-12
TP:
7-6, 7-12, 7-13a, 7-15
