v0 = 12.0 m/s

Physics:    projectile motion

Solve:

v0x = v0 cosq = (12.0 m/s) cos(40.0o) = 9.19 m/s

v0y = v0 sinq = (12.0 m/s) sin(40.0o) = 7.71 m/s

vy = 0 (when the dolphin goes through the hoop)

vy2= v0y2- 2 g (y - y0)

0 = v0y2- 2 g (y - 0)

0 = v0y2- 2 g y

y = v0y2/ (2 g) = (7.71 m/s)2/ (2 g) = 3.03 m
