General and Career Information
PowerPoint presentation on the B.S. Biology degree.
The B.S. degree in Biology has been designed in consultation with Georgia employers to fit present and emerging needs in the State of Georgia. The program provides the opportunity for students to specialize their curriculum into six emphasis areas: biomedical applications for pre-medical and pre-dental students, preparation for graduate schooling, pre-veterinary medicine, forensic science, environmental science, and preparation for programs in physical therapy and as physicians assistants. These areas represent the top concerns of area employers and are consistent with national hiring trends. The B.S. degree includes curriculum options that support three (3) of the top 25 fastest growing jobs in the United States (Office of Employment Statistics, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). More importantly, projected growth rates in Georgia for these fields exceed those for the U.S. as a whole (Georgia Department of Labor, Labor Market and Occupational Information, 1998).
The American Institute of Biological Sciences maintains a Web site providing career information for the biological sciences.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics maintains detailed and current information on biology related careers.
Biology includes a wide variety of sub-fields and related disciplines. Career information for a number of these fields and disciplines is available through this link from Furman University.
There are a number of Biotechnology job opportunities in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. Southern Polytechnic State University keeps a listing of all Biotechnology companies that can be found in the Atlanta Metropolitan area. Click here
