Welcome to the Clayton State Biology Program

Welcome!

In 2000, Clayton State University began offering a B.S. degree in Biology (formerly called the Applied Biology degree). The B.S. degree was designed in consultation with Georgia employers to fit present and emerging needs in the State of Georgia. Along with providing a required core of classes in biology, the program includes a rigorous background in chemistry and physics that will allow our students to succeed in their chosen career. Upper-level students choose one of five different emphasis areas, allowing them to take courses that are appropriate for their career goals. In addition, all students earning the Biology degree participate in internships or independent research projects with faculty.

Why major in Biology?

As our society becomes increasingly technological, career opportunities for individuals with science degrees will continue to increase. Students majoring in biology can work in a number of areas, including government agencies and law enforcement. The major also prepares the student for further education in pursuit of graduate degrees or professional degrees in biological fields (e.g., medicine, dentistry, etc.).

Biology Outcomes

After completing the B.S. in biology Program at Clayton State University, graduates will:

  1. Effectively demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of major fields of biology.
  2. Demonstrate a mastery of a broad range of basic lab and technology skills applicable to biology.
  3. Apply knowledge of physical science, mathematics, and statistics to biological concepts.
  4. Communicate scientific information in a clear, concise manner both orally and in writing.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to collect, evaluate and interpret scientific data, and employ critical thinking to solve problems in biological science and supporting fields
  6. Collaborate effectively on team-oriented projects.
